911 calls capture chaos after truck-on-bus crash

ORLAND, Calif. (AP) — With shrieks in the background, a shocked passenger struggled to recount to an emergency dispatcher how a FedEx tractor-trailer smashed into a tour bus carrying high school students. In other 911 calls released Thursday, other witnesses described explosions after the fiery wreck that left 10 people dead.

The California Highway Patrol released the recordings as investigators returned to the scene about 100 miles north of Sacramento to reconstruct aspects of the crash.

Dozens of injured students escaped through windows before the bus exploded into towering flames just before 6 p.m. April 10.

One student who escaped held back sobs in describing on a 911 call how the FedEx truck barreled across the median of Interstate 5 and smashed into the bus.

A dispatcher assured the student that medical help was coming and told the student to "go as far away as you can safely get" when he learned that the bus was still engulfed in flames.

Later, the dispatcher asked, "What did the bus hit?" and the student started to explain that the truck smashed into its left side. The dispatcher tried to refocus the student: "Just with one or two words, tell me what the bus hit."

"The bus hit a FedEx truck," the student replied. "The FedEx truck came into us."

"Was it head on?"

"Yes, head on."

It was not clear whether the student was a boy or girl. None of the 911 callers were identified.

Other calls came from witnesses and nearby residents.

"A bus just exploded," said one woman.

"It just exploded," said one man. "Whatever's on the freeway is on fire."

The bus was carrying 44 high school students from the Los Angeles area for a visit to Humboldt State University on California's far north coast. Many stood to be the first in their family to attend college.

Five students and three adult chaperones died, along with the truck and bus drivers.

As the CHP released the recordings, the agency's investigators were reconstructing how the bus driver might have reacted to the sight of the big rig, which burst out of vegetation on the freeway's median into oncoming traffic, sideswiping a car before hitting the bus.

The CHP briefly closed the stretch of Interstate 5 where the crash happened and drove the same model Serta 2014 bus northbound at about 70 mph. The driver braked so investigators could gauge how its speed would have dropped.

On the southbound side, a driver in the same model 2007 Volvo truck released the accelerator, in a similar effort to understand how its speed might have changed.

Video cameras on both vehicles recorded what each driver could have seen before the crash.

The reconstruction did not include any collision. Investigators will use what they learned to calculate how fast each vehicle was traveling before the wreck.

The truck's data recorder was destroyed in the explosion and fire, but investigators said they may be able to recover some data about its speed and maneuvering by other forensic analysis.

Investigators are working through a 3-inch-thick stack of records including the truck's maintenance history and its driver's recent shifts, CHP Capt. Todd Morrison said. The FedEx driver had no prior moving violations, according to the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

It is too early to say whether mechanical failure or driver error caused the truck to careen out of control, Morrison said. That determination by the CHP, and by a parallel investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, will take months.

The driver of the car struck first by the truck told investigators the truck was in flames before the crash, but Morrison said the CHP has found no evidence to corroborate that account. NTSB investigators also found no physical evidence of a pre-impact fire or other witnesses relating the same story.

Glenn County Coroner Larry Jones said all but two victims have been identified. He said that initially, his office was looking for one student believed to be among the dead, but it turned out the student had never boarded the bus in the first place.

NYC building explosion leaves 3 dead, 60 injured

A massive explosion followed by a fire at a pair of apartment buildings in upper Manhattan on Wednesday has left three people dead and at least 60 injured, officials say.

The extent of all injuries wasn't immediately known, but earlier in the day fire officials said seven people were in serious condition, including two with life-threatening injuries.

Rescuers are currently combing through bricks by hand in an effort to locate other possible victims. More than a dozen people are reportedly unaccounted for.

“There are a number of people missing,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference. “I emphasize that those who are missing could well be safe in another location and just not contacted yet or reachable yet.”

The FDNY said it received a call shortly after 9:30 a.m. reporting a large explosion in the five-story apartment building on Park Avenue near 116th Street in East Harlem.

The blast shattered windows and crumbled walls up to several blocks away from the explosion. Residents in the neighborhood told reporters they feared the earthshaking boom was a terrorist attack. One man was so worried, he told CNN, that he rushed out of his home wearing nothing but his underwear.

"This is a tragedy of the worst kind," de Blasio said. "There was no indication in time to save people."

Based on preliminary information, the mayor said, “The only indication of danger came about 15 minutes earlier when a gas leak was reported to Con Edison. Con Ed dispatched a team to respond. The explosion occurred before that team could arrive."

Hayden Panetierre and Other Stars Are Moving to Nashville

The stars are packing up and moving to Nashville! Hayden Panettiere may have been born in New York but now she's a bonafide country girl! The 24-year-old has filmed two seasons of her hit ABC show Nashville in
Tennessee, but was reluctant to set up residency there — until now. The starlet revealed to People magazine that she and her fiancĂ©, boxer Wladimir Klitschko, are ready to buy a home in Nashville, and her hesitation has passed. Hayden told the mag, "After a year and a half of living here, I felt that I had enough personal investment here, that I want to have a grounding here, even if something happens to the show. Knock on wood it won't! But I have amazing friends here and this just feels good as a home base. But Hayden isn't the only star making a home in Nashville. In November, Justin Timberlake opened up to The Tennessean about his love of the city, saying I spend way more time in Nashville than people realize. The singer, who was born just outside of Memphis, added I admire this town a lot. They take care of their own. There are not a lot of places in the world, much less America, that do that. It's just a great place. So could Nashville be a permanent home for the 32-year-old? He told the paper, "I think there could be a place for me here in the future for sure. Absolutely I will work in Nashville. That's probably the next move for me. The next move for me is to sink some teeth in here.Nicole Kidman traded Los Angeles for Nashville when she married Keith Urban, and she couldn't be happier about the move. The Oscar winner told Ladies Home Journal I love living here. It's a long way from New York and Los Angeles, but that's part of the attraction. I feel protected here.

How to Fake a Clean House in 45 Minutes or Less

Sexy lady girls in decorated party:Throwing a party seemed like a fabulous idea three weeks ago, but now you are in a panic because there is less than one hour to go before the doorbell rings. Maybe you were held up at work or got  stuck in traffic. Or perhaps you just procrastinated whatever the reason, you need to tidy up fast and save a few minutes to spruce yourself up as well. Fortunately, you don't need to deep-clean your home to get it party-ready.
Infomercial Cleaning Products Put to the Test
Your kitchen and your bathroom are the most important rooms to tackle when you have guests coming over," Frank Trotta, owner of urbanmaidgreen.com, which was named the best green cleaning service in 2011 by New York magazine, tells
Yahoo Shine. No matter how big your house is, everyone always congregates in the kitchen.Trotta recommends cleaning any shiny surfaces that might catch the eye, including appliances, fixtures, and mirrors. He's also a fan of microfiber cloths—they are miraculous, reusable dust magnets — and says use them to give the furniture in public areas a quick once-over.
A Nontoxic Cleaning Product You Can Make Yourself
Don't waste your time on big projects like scrubbing the bathtub: It's the clutter that really makes a home look messy. Guests won't notice a few crumbs in the carpet, and you can always draw the shades to cover grimy windows. Instead, Trotta says it's important to stow away magazines, papers, remote control units, and other loose items.
Other speed-cleaning tips:
If your sink is full of dishes or silverware and you don't have time to wash, hide them in a big stockpot and deal with them later. Or stash them in the oven if you aren't going to be using it.
All those school drawings and grocery lists that are stuck to the fridge with magnets? Take them down for the party they make your kitchen look messy
Get really friendly with microfiber cloths. You won't need additional cleaning products for this guerrilla-style attack, just a little water and elbow grease. Look for obvious sticky or dirty spots, instead of tackling an entire counter or other surface area. The same goes for floors and stairs —  just turn up the lights so you can see any dirty spots and give them a quick rub.
Spruce up your bathroom in one minute or less: Shake the bathmat into the tub and close the shower curtain. Clear any personal items from the counter. Microfiber-wipe the mirror. Change the hand towels and light a candle. Bam.That lint roller you use on your best clothing also works great on the cat's favorite chair.
Polish kitchen and bathroom faucets. This may not seem important, but Trotta says if they sparkle, the whole room will look better. While microfiber cloths are ideal, if you don't have any, grab the dishtowel or hand towel that's already hanging in the room, get it damp and do a spot-clean.
Keep one side of your sofa and chair cushions "for company only.Just flip them over when you want the room to look special and you won't have to worry about stains, pet hair and fading.
Don't have much storage space? Grab a laundry basket or even a big cardboard box, and walk (OK, dash) through all the public areas. Use it to stash all your clutter — you can always sort it out later. As a last resort (or if you like a more "lived-in" look…ahem), stack piles of books and magazines neatly and top with a knickknack or small vase — your clutter will suddenly appear fashionable.
Make your bed neatly. It's the one thing guests will focus on if they see your bedroom. Don't worry about clean sheets they are hidden under the bedspread. Remember when you were eight years old and your mom told you to clean your room? Shoving everything under the bed still works.
Tidy up your entrance area. Clear away extra coats and shoes, stash your mail, and put out some flowers if you have the space. It's the first area guests will see and, if it appears organized, it will make the rest of your home appear cleaner.Take out the trash and open the windows for a few minutes to eliminate any bad odors. You will need the empty garbage cans for the party, anyway. If your home has been invaded by an army of dust bunnies and you need to clean the floor, forget using a broom and just do a mad vacuum through the high-traffic areas where people are likely to gather. In the final few minutes before guests arrive, after you have applied your lipstick or tucked in your shirt,  take a deep breath, dim the lights, and make your home smell inviting. You can simmer mulled wine or cider on the stove for a warm and spicy scent or just spritz a little deodorizer near your living room seating area, bathroom, and kitchen. Trotta likes the biodegradable products made by Simple Green. And never apologize for the condition of your home — your guests came to have fun, not to give the white glove test to your countertop.

Zindzi Mandela, the late South African president's 55-year-old daughter, was overcome with emotion while inside the screening and left afterward without speaking to the press. News of Mandela's death stunned the audience.
Idris Elba, who plays Mandela in the film, didn't address the crowd but issued a statement shortly afterward: “What an honor it was to step into the shoes of Nelson Mandela and portray a man who defied odds, broke down barriers, and championed human rights before the eyes of the world. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
Harvey Weinstein, whose Weinstein Company is distributing the Oscar-buzzing film and who was also at Thursday's Royal film premiere, also released a statement. The mogul revealed that he spent time with the iconic South African leader before he died, making note of the late leader's humor and idealism:One of the privileges of making movies is having the opportunity to immortalize those who have made a profound impact on humanity. We count ourselves unspeakably fortunate to have been immersed in Nelson Mandela's story and legacy. It's been an honor to have been granted such proximity to a man who will go down as one of history's greatest freedom fighters and advocates for justice. I have had the privilege of spending time with President Mandela and I can say his sense of humor was as great as his optimism. We are deeply saddened by his loss; our hearts go out to his family and the entire South African nation.
Meanwhile, Morgan Freeman, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Mandela in "Invictus," also issued a statement on Thursday: "Today the world lost one of the true giants of the past century.  Nelson Mandela was a man of  incomparable honor, unconquerable strength, and unyielding resolve — a saint to many, a hero to all who treasure liberty, freedom and the dignity of humankind. As we remember his triumphs, let us, in his memory, not just reflect on how far we’ve come, but on how far we have to go. Madiba may no longer be with us, but his journey continues on with me and with all of us.

How Many Times Has Keira Knightley Worn Her Wedding Dress?

It's rare enough that celebrities ever step out in the same dress twice but apparently Keira Knightley isn't shy about recycling her fashion especially when it comes to her wedding dress!
The 28-year-old actress stepped out at the Serious Fun London Gala Tuesday night in a gorgeous light pink
Chanel Haute Couture number, but it wasn't the first time we've seen it; the brunette beauty actually donned the lovely gown to marry her sweetheart, musician James Righton, in the South of France back in May.

7 Latest Updates in Paul Walker Death Investigation]
Walker and Rodas were killed when Rodas apparently lost control of their 2005
Porsche Carrera GT and slammed into a tree and light pole on Saturday afternoon in Valencia California, bursting into flames.Walker had just participated in a nearby charity event. He was on a Thanksgiving weekend hiatus from filming Fast & Furious 7.The Los Angeles Country Sheriff's Department is still investigating the cause of the crash. Investigators hope to have their initial findings in the next week. Although speed was determined to be a contributing factor detectives are also looking at the possibility of a mechanical failure or blown tire.In the meantime the scene of the accident has become a makeshift memorial, attracting family friends co-stars, and fans who are leaving flowers, photos, and other mementos.
Also Wednesday morning, Universal Pictures announced it was shutting down production on the latest sequel.
'Wheel of Fortune' Slammed for Ill-Timed Paul Walker Reference]
Right now all of us at Universal are dedicated to providing support to Paul's immediate family and our extended Fast & Furious' family of cast, crew, and filmmakers the studio said in a statement. At this time we feel it is our responsibility to shut down production on 'Fast & Furious 7' for a period of time so we can assess all options available to move forward with the franchise. We are committed to keeping 'Fast & Furious' fans informed, and we will provide further information to them when we have it. Until then, we know they join us in mourning the passing of our dear friend Paul Walker.Sources tell Yahoo that about two-thirds of the film would have to be rewritten to accommodate the loss of Walker and the screenwriters will be huddling with studio execs director James Wan, and franchise co-star Vin Diesel to come up with a respectful way to proceed. Among the options: scrap the footage that has been shot and start over from scratch.

Newtown 911 tapes: 'They're still running, they're still shooting'

I think there's somebody shooting in here says an unidentified woman calling from inside the school.
What makes you think that? a 911 dispatcher asks.Because somebody's got a gun, I saw a glimpse of
somebody running down the hallway she replies, her voice shaking. They're still running, they're still shooting.Harrowing 911 calls made from Sandy Hook Elementary School to Newtown, Conn., police were released Wednesday, giving the public a small but chilling window into the mass shooting that killed 26 people, including 20 children, last December.
Authorities released seven audio-enhanced calls made as 20-year-old gunman Adam Lanza shot his way into the school and began his killing spree.
Newtown police dispatchers can be heard urging school administrators to take shelter amid the massacre.
Keep everyone down, keep everyone away from the windows," a female dispatcher calmly tells a teacher. "Try to lock down the school."
A male dispatcher stayed on the line for several minutes with Rick Thorne, the school's custodian.
"There's still shooting going on, please!" Thorne shouts. “I keep hearing shooting. I keep hearing popping.” The sound of gunshots can be heard in the background.
The dispatcher picks up several calls in a row while keeping the custodian on the line for updates on the shooting.
Guys we've got a shooting in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown the dispatcher says to his colleagues. That's why 911 is ringing off the hook right now.
Stephen Sedensky III, a state's attorney, fought against the release of the calls, arguing that the tapes — which were "being made on the murder of children as it occurs were too gruesome for residents to bear.If the public never hears those cries for help during this process they won't be harmed Sedensky said last month.
Nathan C. Zezula, attorney for the Newtown Police Department, said the department wanted to keep the tapes away from "voyeuristic interests. But Superior Court Judge Eliot Prescott ruled that the 911 tapes be released under the Freedom of Information Act so the public could judge the police response to the killings. On Tuesday, Newtown School Superintendent John Reed sent an email to Newtown parents, warning that the recordings could serve as an emotional trigger.Newtown First Selectman Patricia Llodra, who supported making the calls public, released a statement Wednesday:The release of the tapes will create a new layer of pain for many in the Newtown community. Hearing those calls takes us back to a day of horror and tragedy. My plea is for the media to treat us kindly ... to recognize that there is great personal pain in this event and little public good to be garnered through the general release. Imagine yourself as a parent of a child who was killed, or a family member of one of the six educators. Imagine yourself as a teacher or staff member in that building desperate to save the lives of children. Imagine you are the parent of a child who was able to escape. Then ask yourself, media person, what is the public good and how do I balance that against the hurt?
Last week, Sedensky released a summary of the state's nearly yearlong investigation into the massacre, shedding no new light on Lanza's motive. Lanza, who killed his mother at their Newtown home before his rampage at the school, killed himself as police arrived.
"The obvious question that remains is: 'Why did the shooter murder twenty-seven people, including twenty children?'" the report states. "Unfortunately, that question may never be answered conclusively.
With additional reporting from Liz Goodwin and Jason Sickles.

'Voice' Rocked by Shocking Elimination

On Tuesday night The Voice narrowed things down to the final five, and the Instant Save led to a pretty shocking elimination. The final two pitted James Wolpert against Matthew Schuler and while both performed
well Matthew seemed like a lock for the finals.Unfortunately America sent him packing. And while he may not have had as many tweets as James he sure had some pretty vocal supporters on Twitter who felt he got the short end of the stick.Perhaps it's a sign that the Instant Save should be instantly eliminated!

Paul Walker Was a True Gem According to Jewelry Store Clerk

Paul Walker was best known for his action-packed films but many are remembering the late actor, who died on Saturday in a fiery car crash as a big softie with a huge heart.During the holiday season several years ago the Fast & Furious actor walked into Bailey Banks and Biddle Jewelers in Santa Barbara California and according to sales associate Irene King what happened next was
practically out of a feel-good Hollywood movie.King told CBS Los Angeles that an associate nudged her and said There’s Paul Walker.
Oh OK yeah King replied with a smile.I said Yeah he’s a nice-looking man.Walker was browsing for bling at the same time as a soldier who had just finished his first tour of duty in Iraq and was looking at engagement rings with his fiancĂ©e.

According to King, the pair saw a ring set they liked, but it was way too expensive and boasted a hefty $10,000 price tag.In comes Walker. The blue-eyed actor called the store's manager and told him to put the ring that the couple was looking at on his tab but to keep his identity hidden. He promptly walked out of the store.According to King, the store never told the couple that Walker was the man behind the purchase, and nobody ever knew the sweet story until now.King posted the story on the 40-year-old actor's Facebook page among thousands of other anecdotes where people remembered him as generous loving and with a heart of pure gold.Walker was a dedicated supporter of charities like the Billfish Foundation and could always be counted on to raise funds for those in need. He founded his own organization Reach Out Worldwide, after the 2010 Haiti earthquake. To do something like that to a perfect stranger is just unbelievable King said.In this case it appears that Paul Walker's generosity shined brighter than any diamond.

Auburn says someone dumped cremation ashes on the field after Iron Bowl win

When fans rushed the field in jubilation after Auburn's win over Alabama on Saturday, one fan apparently left
a loved one on the field.
According to Birmingham's Fox 6, it's the second time that the crew has found ashes on the field after the game.
If you were an Auburn fan and wanted your ashes left at Jordan-Hare, the aftermath of Saturday's game has to be the pinnacle, right?
We can't imagine a scenario that gets any better than that. And hopefully that other game wasn't either the Western Carolina or the Florida Atlantic games. That would be an ultimate case of eternal regret.
